Charlottesville Community Kitchen

This project was sited at the threshold between to distinct neighborhoods in Charlottesville, one concentrated with mostly temporary student populations, the other mostly underserved and primarily low income. The program and site were chosen strategically to activate a space that currently acts as a dividing line.

The structure of the building is organized around the walls that are required to retain earth on the sloping site. The walls inform circulation, which is oriented both in parallel and perpendicularly to the site’s terrain. The extension of these walls create and enclose space, as well as inform spatial hierarchies.
